CATHOLIC PRIEST WHO BECAME A MASKED WRESTLER TO FEED ORPHAN

✝️THE CATHOLIC PRIEST WHO BECAME A MASKED WRESTLER TO FEED ORPHANS 😳

Sergio Gutiérrez Benítez, better known as Fray Tormenta (“Brother Storm”), is one of the most extraordinary figures in recent Catholic history, a priest whose calling led him to an unlikely world: the wrestling ring.

Born on September 23, 1945, in Hidalgo, Mexico, Sergio grew up in poverty and faced a turbulent youth. He was involved in street fights and boxing, experiences that gave him strength, resilience, and a firsthand understanding of hardship. Later, a profound conversion changed his life, and he entered the seminary, eventually becoming a priest in the 1970s, dedicating himself to serving the poor.

While working in the State of Mexico, Father Gutiérrez saw a heartbreaking reality: countless orphaned and abandoned children had no support. Determined to care for them, he founded an orphanage. But with almost no funding and few donors, keeping the children fed and educated became a daily challenge.

That’s when he turned to an unexpected solution: wrestling. Drawing on his athletic background, he became Fray Tormenta, a masked luchador whose costume cleverly resembled a monk’s hood, blending faith and spectacle. To protect his priestly vocation and avoid controversy, he kept his identity secret, even from fellow clergy.

Through the 1980s and 1990s, Fray Tormenta competed in hundreds of matches across Mexico. Despite injuries, broken bones, and advancing age, he never stopped. Every peso he earned went directly to his orphanage, providing food, schooling, and medical care for the children.

Only later did the public learn the truth about the masked priest, and instead of criticism, Fray Tormenta became a symbol of selfless dedication, creativity, and courage, showing that sometimes extraordinary measures are needed to serve those in need.
